Versatile Viognier – Viognier is a true success story in the world of wine grape varities. At one point in the mid-sixties, only 8 hectares of Viognier were planted in Condrieu, its homeland appellation in the Rhône. Now the grape is grown around the world and is particularly popular in California and Australia. Viognier is everywhere; it has been used in many red and white blends, as well being offered as a varietal wine.
This lush varietal has a stunning bouquet reminiscent of spring flowers and tropical fruit. Its rich flavors of spice, honey, apricot, and peach are typical of sweeter wines, so Viognier’s dryness and low acidity may pleasantly surprise some drinkers. Like most white wines, Viognier can be drunk young, but can also be lightly aged for more complex flavors. With its full-bodied mouth feel, exotic aroma, and ethereal flavors, Viognier certainly deserves its popularity.
It is, however, a problematic grape variety to grow, suffering from mold and low fruit yield in some conditions. Winemakers continue to develop hardier strains, and the wines are certainly worth any headache the vintner may develop. If you’d like to try Viognier, it can be had for between £10 and £16, but when buying on a sale or return alcohol basis, you may be able to pick up a bargain.
