Tempranillo

Enjoy Tempranillo, the “Little Early One” – The Tempranillo variety of black grape is one of the primary grapes grown in Spain, but recently vineyards in the United States, Australia and South Africa have begun planting this variety. The name Tempranillo, meaning “little early one,” stems from the fact that it has a shorter growing season than other red-wine grapes of the region.

The Tempranillo grape is the main grape used in Spanish Rioja, and is used in other blends as well. Tempranillo is also becoming popular as a stand-alone varietal.

Tempranillo wines are moderate in alcohol content and can be consumed young. Bottles of Tempranillo are labeled with one of three classifications: Crianza, Reserva, or Gran Reserva. Crianza bottles are simple, drinkable table wines; Reserva wines are more robust and flavourful, and the Gran Reserva designation is saved for the most complex wines from the very best vintages. Crianzas range between 6-13 GBP in price. Reservas can be found from 4-45 GBP, and Gran Reservas run the gamut from 13-65 GBP.
