Semillon

Sensual Sémillon
Sémillon is a white grape, though it can turn pinkish in warm climates. The fruit is often heavy, with an almost oily texture, and produces wines that age well. Easy to cultivate and yielding abundant fruit, this variety is resistant to most grape diseases – except rot, with which Sémillon has a special relationship. The “noble rot” or Botrytis cinerea causes the grapes to shrivel, intensifying acids and sugars. Winemakers intentionally infect the crop with this variety of rot in order to produce rich, sweet dessert wines.

The Sémillon wine grape’s past is unclear. It has been grown for centuries in France, where it is part of many of the region’s fine white wines. Introduced to Australia and South Africa in the early nineteenth century, Sémillon was often misidentified as Reisling, further clouding its history.

The most famous, expensive, and utterly decadent dessert wine in the world, Château d’Yquem, owes its lushness to Sémillon, which makes up 80% of its blend. Some dry whites are made in Bordeaux and California, usually blended with other white grapes. Standing alone as a varietal, Sémillon is soft and subtle, with flavors of vanilla or cream and a light aroma of fruit.
