Sauvignon Blanc

The Sauvignon Blanc wine grape can be grown in France, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil and California (USA). The grapes are normally green in color, and originate from Bordeaux, France. The name Sauvignon Blanc is French for “Wild white,” and it is one of the most well-known and widely available white wine grape varieties in the world.

The vine of Sauvignon Blanc grape will bud late, but ripen early. This makes the vine very versatile because it can stand to grow in a sunny climate. It is best suited where it will not be affected by too high of heat, however. If the grapes are exposed to temperatures that are too high, they will over ripen, which flattens the taste and dulls the acidity which is the main flavor appeal of these grapes.

Sauvignon Blanc wines are gaining popularity, and are being considered the alternative to Chardonnay. The wines that are made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes can vary, but will normally produce a bold, dry flavor. Some say that is the strongest of the whites, especially when compared to Pinots and Reislings.

For those who want an even more bold white flavor, there is a type of Sauvignon Blanc that is grown in flinty soil called Fume Blanc, which is even more bold in flavor and dryness.
