Roussanne

The roussanne grape variety originated in the Rhone valley in France, and is most typically used in the production of white wine. The grape variety has spread throughout the world, now being grown in the states of Washington and California in addition to Italy, Spain, and Australia. The grapes are distinguished by their reddish-brown color when fully ripe. The flavor notes of wines produced with the roussanne grape vary depend on the climate in which the grapes are grown. In warmer climates, the grape is characterized by flavors reminiscent of pears and honey; the wines also exhibit a full-bodied taste. When the grapes are raised in more cool climes, such as Washington state, the wines exhibits a more delicate body. The roussane grape variety has a number of disadvantages that have limited its growing area and appeal to vintners. The grape variety has little resistance to drought and wind; its vulnerability to mildew is also an issue when attempting to grow the grape. These and other factors also contribute to the grapes propensity to overripen, and thus give the vintner irregular yields.
