Nebbiolo

Viticulture of the Nebbiolo Grape
An Italitian wine grape variety grown mainly in the Piedmont region, Nebbiolo grapes are harvested in late October when a dense fog rolls in. Prior to harvest, the Nebbiolo grape requires specific conditions from growing premium crops.

Naturally high in acidity and tannins, Nebbiolo requires sufficient warmth, yet on the cool side to develop the sugars and fruit. For this reason, sunny southern slopes at 500 to 100 ft are ideal locations to grow Nebbiolo. The slopes also help protect from the ever blowing northern winds. High concentrations of calerous soils are preferred as Nebbiolo vines do not adapt well to other known grape growing soil.

Rains during the period of budding and flowering can effect yield and quality. This time also make the Nebbiolo vine susceptible to coulure. During the period of version rains determine the quantity of grapes. Dry weather during the months of September and October produce the most highly rated Nebbiolo. The skins of the Nebbiolo grow to be tough and resistant to pests and mold under the right conditions, producing such fine wines as Barolo & Barbaresco.
