One of the most frequently used wine grapes in the world is merlot, which is a red wine grape that is used frequently in blends and by itself in wine. The merlot grape is grown largely in France, other European countries, the United States, and even some parts of South America like Chile and Argentina. Overall, it is the third most commonly grown grape in the world with over 640,000 acres dedicated to its growth.
Merlot based wines are normally characterized by their full strong flavor and medium body. Depending on the climate in which merlot is grown, wine enthusiasts can find a full range of flavors. Merlot grapes grown in cool regions generally give off hints of berries and cedar, while those grown in warm climates give off the taste of fruitcake or chocolate. Merlot is commonly used as a compliment to charred meats, such as steak and port.
While merlot wine is enjoyed by itself, the merlot grape is used in a wide variety of blends. Along with cabernet, petit verdot, and malbec, the merlot grape is a large component of the Bordeaux blend of wines.
The cost of a bottle of merlot ranges significantly from one bottle to the next, but they are definitely worth trying on a sale or return basis when looking for your wedding wine, or party wine!
