The chenin blanc grape variety, also known as Steen or Pineau de la Loire, is a grape variety that is used to produce white wines, sparkling wines, and dessert wines. The grape variety originated in the Loire Valley of France, and is still widely cultivated in that area. The grape variety is also cultivated in various other parts of world, and particularly in South Africa where it has become the most popular grape variety among vintners in that country. While the grape can be characterized by a high level of acidity, this character is tempered by the climate in which it is raised and its terroir. Wines produced with chenin blanc grapes are usually described as having flavor notes of honey and peaches. Less ripe grapes are typically used in the production of sparkling wines. For the production of dessert wines, vintners leave the grapes on the vine so that they over-ripen. Once the grapes develop noble rot, they are harvested for use in dessert wines.
