Most of southern France is covered by a vast spread of beautiful vineyards. There are many types of grapes used to make the delicious red wine found in France, but carignan grapes are one of the most popular. Farmers enjoy harvesting these grapes because they to produce very large yields. The grape usually grows in an upright manner and lends itself well to growth without a trellis.
History of Carignan Grapes
These grapes originated in a tiny village known as Cariñena, located in the community of Aragon, Spain. During the middle of the twentieth century, carignan grapes spread to the rest of Spain, and soon were found all over Italy and France. The popularity of carignan grapes grew most quickly in France, where, by 1988, carignan had grown to be the most widely used red wine grape.
Wine Regions
Today, carignan is found all over the world. The grapes tend to bud and ripen on the late side, which necessitates a longer growing season. As such, carignan wine grapes grow best in warmer regions that have long summers and mild winters. Carignan has proven most successful in regions such as California, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Australia, South Africa, Chile, Uruguay and Mexico.
