Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc grapes are a fairly common variety of red grapes which is easily grown in areas with little or no rainfall. It is often grown as a companion grape to blend with other red wines to give depth of character, but this grape can certainly hold its own. Cabernet Franc wines are celebrated the world over, but the Cabernet Franc variety originated in the Libournais region of France.

The Cabernet Franc grapes are grown in Europe, Australia, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, China and Kazakhstan. France grows the most Cabernet Franc grapes. They are sometimes referred to as Breton or Bouchet, depending on the region where they were grown. They are an early ripening grape and have a low acid content. The grapes have a blueish or almost black tinge.

Cabernet Franc wines often have a grassy, fresh aroma. The taste palette for these wines is very berry-like, resembling raspberry, cherry or plum, with an earthy depth to it. These wines are great for pairing with food and would easily stand out at a wine-tasting party. Like most reds, the Cabernet Franc pairs well with red meat.
