Although Italy’s Chiantis and other reds are iconic, Italian white wines are worthy of connoisseurs’ wine cellars. Italy’s Mediterranean sunshine and rich volcanic soil yield many delicious varietals, and the better options are available in the UK. Imported Italian whites are usually labeled Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) or Denominazione di Origine Controllata et Garantita (DOCG), two indicators of superior quality.
White wines are produced throughout Italy, but vineyards are most heavily concentrated in the north. The best-known white Italian wines come from Garganega and Trebbiano grapes grown in the Soave region. Recioto di Soave is a particularly pleasing sweet wine made from partially dried grapes. Meanwhile, central Italy is especially renowned for its full-bodied reds, but Verdicchio and Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi are reputable whites from the heartland. Finally, southern Italy’s top whites are produced in Sicily. Carricante, a grape indigenous to Sicily, lends a nutty flavor to local wines. Planeta and Gulfi Valcanzjria are some excellent island vintners.
Italian white wines are reasonably priced. Organic white wines from Italy such as Terre di Chieti 2008, Soave Borgoletto 2008, and Tiziano Barrique 2006 can be had for around £10. Why not try a selection of Italian White wines on a sale or return basis, in preparation for your wedding or party.
