Red wines from Spain have been seeing a marked increase in prevalence in the last couple of decades. Spain has always been an important wine producing nation, but for a good portion of the twentieth century political strife and instability prevented Spanish viticulture from reaching its full potential.
Spain has a long tradition of wine-making that dates back thousands of years, due in part to the vast number of grape varieties native to the Iberian peninsula. Spain actually has more land devoted to wine grapes than any other nation but because of the dry climate and the general poor quality of the soil, the amount of actual wine production is less than other nations’.
Many of the leading red wines from Spain hail from the Rioja region in the north, where the Tempranillo grape is king. Red wines from Spain are commonly classified and labeled by age. “Crianza” denotes a two year aging period with at least six months in oak casks. “Reserva” wines have been aged for at least three years with one year in oak. “Gran Reserva” red wines are a bit harder to find, having been aged for at least five years.
